Carbon Fiber F1 Cars
A revolution in racing car body materials in the early 1980s led to the standard Formula 1 racing car chassis of today. No longer made of a metal, today's F1 cars are made of an ultra light and strong plastic-like material called carbon fiber, which used to be more associated with the aerospace industry than with racing cars. Formula 1 engineers have become so adept at working with carbon composite materials, however, that other industries now turn to it for advice.

F1 Wind Tunnels
Aerodynamics on Formula 1 cars is a science of gaining the most grip through using the wind. Unlike with airplanes, the wings of a racing car push the car down to the track, not up in the air. The effect allows a car to slide less and turn a faster lap. To develop the best aerodynamic grip possible, F1 teams use a wind tunnel.

F1 for Ignoramuses
Formula 1 is the most popular form of world motor racing, unlike IndyCar, which has a much smaller fan base, thanks partly to a division of the two major open-wheel series in the U.S. in the past decade. F1 is at the pinnacle of motor racing both technologically and in terms of the quality of the drivers - not IndyCar. In IndyCar, the cars are built by teams according to regulations. IndyCar races on oval tracks, F1 never does.

Outline of Typical F1 Weekend
Although Formula 1 Grand Prix races always take place on a Sunday, there is a lot more activity than that surrounding a race and extending a week around the event. From the arrival of the motor homes and cars and garage equipment to the arrival of the drivers themselves, there's a lot more to it than an hour and a half on Sunday afternoon.

F1 Race Strategy
Formula 1 is not only the most advanced form of racing technologically, it is also the most advanced in terms of race strategy. Birel Karts - From Go-Karting to Formula 1
Virtually all of the Formula 1 drivers start out racing as children in go-karts. Karting is the best school for racing because it is F1 in miniature: Competition, mechanics, driving skills, human relations - everything a driver must know to race at the highest level starts at the lowest level. Karting even has its own world championship yearly. The big companies that make the karts, like Birel, travel to races with chassis, engines, tools and all the necessary pieces for a karting weekend.

Jarno Trulli: Toyota F1 Driver
Jarno Trulli came to prominence in Formula 1 in 1997 when in his first year in the sport he moved from the slow Minardi team to the then fast Prost team as a replacement for another driver in mid-season. It would take until the Monaco Grand Prix of 2004 for the Italian to win a race - but what a race to win. Since then, however, it has been a rough road for the fast, but sometimes shaky, driver at Toyota.

F1 Driver Changes 2009
Every summer the Formula 1 teams start deciding who they will sign for the following season. Although some drivers have longterm contracts, other drivers are frequently on the move from team to team. Others are cut quickly and disappear. The so-called "silly season" is a period where the puzzle of who will race for whom comes together piece by piece, and often depends on one or two important links in the chain.

Honda: Return of a Titan
After six seasons powering the BAR cars as an engine provider, the Honda Motor Co. bought the team and raced under its own name from 2006. It was the second period of the Japanese company as a full fledged team in Formula 1, after it raced in F1 from 1964 to 1968 building both the chassis and the engine. It also turned out to be good luck for the fourth most victorious engine building company, as Honda won its first race since the Italian Grand Prix of 1967 at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2006.

A McLaren Return?
McLaren is one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history. But it has not won a world title since 1999, and in 2006 it failed even to win a race for the first time in a decade. With two new drivers, including double world champion Fernando Alonso, and with the best factory in the sport, is the team set for a return to victory in 2007?

Renault: Double F1 Champions
Although the Renault car manufacturer was long one of the most successful engine builders in Formula 1, it was not until 2005 that Renault managed to win a world constructors' title as both engine and chassis builder. It also won the drivers' title that year with Fernando Alonso, and then won both titles again in 2006. The team lost Alonso for 2007, dropped in the standings, but rehired the Spaniard for 2008 and has high hopes for a renewal.

Toyota: Team Challenges F1
Unlike all of the other car manufacturer teams now in Formula 1, Toyota took a big chance by starting up a completely new team from scratch when it entered the series in 2002. It had spent several years preparing for the step, and scored only two points that year. But the team has worked methodically and built up its level of competitiveness until it finished fourth in the series in 2005. In 2006 it dropped back to sixth, but only one point behind BMW in fifth. 2007 is a crucial year.

ING Renault F1 Team Car Launch - Formula 1 Car Launch - F1 2008 Season
The Renault car launch in Paris in January 2008 was a typical example of the genre today. It began with the top people in the team being presented to journalists and other guests, and then with a film about the making of the car at the team factory. Then the house lights went dim and the car was brought to the stage. The house lights then came on to great fanfare as the car was revealed. The top team members surrouded the car for a photo shoot.

Mason's Maserati 250 F of 1957 was extraordinary to look at and think about Juan Manuel Fangio driving one of them in 1957.

BMW Sauber: F1 Contenders
Although the BMW Sauber team is in only its second year as a full car manufacturer team, it was built on the solid basis of the team founded by Peter Sauber. The Sauber team was always a top team in style, although it never found the budget necessary to graduate to the next level. Since BMW bought the Swiss team based in Hinwil, it has invested in the factory and staff in a way that Sauber was never able to do.

Fernando Alonso: F1 Champion
In 2006 Fernando Alonso became the youngest double world champion in Formula 1 history, and the youngest to win consecutive drivers' titles. In fact, at 25, but with five seasons of F1 racing behind him, the Spaniard had a series of "youngest" records to his name. He then joined McLaren-Mercedes for 2007, just missed on the title, and rejoined Renault for 2008.

Vitantonio Liuzzi: F1 Driver
Vitantonio Liuzzi, also known as simply Tonio Liuzzi, was a great hope for Formula 1 when he started racing in the series at the Red Bull team in 2005. He had won the karting world championship and beaten Michael Schumacher at the same time, and then he won the Formula 3000 series with the record number of victories. He was supported by the Red Bull energy drink company. But in his first year he was forced to share the car with Austrian driver Christian Klien, then moved to Toro Rosso.

Williams F1 Team Moves On
Williams is the third most successful team in the history of Formula 1, behind Ferrari and McLaren. But the team, joint owned by Frank Williams and Patrick Head, has not won a world title since 1997. After a brief return to the forefront in 2003, the team dropped down, but not out. It starts the 2007 season with a new engine supplier, in Toyota, and new hopes.

The Grand Prix Drivers' Association was founded by the Formula 1 drivers themselves in 1961 in order, mainly, to improve and ensure safety conditions for them in Grand Prix racing. It has lasted since that time with a few short breaks, and has grown into covering other areas for the drivers, including such things as dealing with the International Automobile Federation over rules and fighting for cheaper personal insurance.

Nick Heidfeld: Solid Racer
Nick Heidfeld was one of the bright young hopes at the turn of the millennium in the lower levels of racing as a protégé of McLaren Mercedes. After joining Formula 1, however, he spent years at weaker teams while newer drivers came in above him. He eventually lost hope of going to the top team that had nurtured him. But in 2005 he began a relationship with BMW at the Williams team which was to pay off when the German car manufacturer started its own team in 2006 and took Heidfeld with it.

Sebastian Vettel: F1 Driver
When Sebastian Vettel was called in to replace Robert Kubica at the U.S. Grand Prix in 2007 and finished eighth he became the youngest driver to score a point in Formula 1. Vettel was the test driver at the BMW Sauber team, but he was also part of the Red Bull Energy drink's driver development program. So when Scott Speed was kicked out of the Toro Rosso team before the Hungarian Grand Prix that same year, Vettel was hired to replace him.

Nico Rosberg: Williams Driver
Son of the Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg, Nico Rosberg proved in his first season that he is capable of racing with the best F1 drivers. In fact, as the youngest driver in the series, he is using his years as a driver at the Williams team intelligently to develop his technical knowledge and racecraft as he tries to follow in his father's footsteps. Nico scored two points in his first race in F1 and set the fastest lap. But the rest of his first season was less exemplary.

Scott Speed: U.S. F1 Driver
In 2006 Scott Speed became the first American driver in Formula 1 since Michael Andretti in 1993. In a sport that has only two American world champion drivers - Phil Hill and Mario Andretti - and few other successful American drivers, Speed, as with any American driver, had a lot to prove. Unfortunately, Speed lasted only a season and a half before he left the team in the summer of 2007.

Then the house lights went dim and the car was brought to the stage. The house lights then came on to great fanfare as the car was revealed.

After seven seasons in the sport, Jenson Button finally won his first Formula 1 race in 2006 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The victory justified one of the most difficult decisions in his career when in 2004 he broke a contract with the Williams team in order to stay with the Honda team, causing bitterness and criticism throughout the paddock.

Patrick Head spoke in an interview about his team's first season in Formula 1 using the Toyota engine. Williams is the third most successful team in F1, but in 2006 it dropped to its lowest position in the series in three decades. Head, along with Frank Williams, is a part owner of the team, which was founded 30 years ago. After he handed over his title of technical director to Sam Michael in 2004, Head is now director of engineering.

Adrian Sutil joined the Spyker F1 team after a distinguished career in the lower formulas and go-karting. Yet even before he discovered racing he had a career as a child concert pianist. It was not until he was 14 that he discovered go-karting, and decided to change careers. He joined Formula 1 at one of the lowest level teams, however, and will not be expected to do as well as his former F3 teammate, Lewis Hamilton, another F1 rookie.
